Glenn Duncan Elementary, which is one of the most at-risk schools within Washoe County School District, is having a fund raising event to support a couple of initiatives for its students. The first initiative is to help the school raise funds to develop a STEM program for all the students within the school. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and a STEM School focuses on these academic subjects to help children acquire the skills required to succeed in today's challenging society. It is believed that if the school is able to provide these subjects, all the students will have an opportunity to learn about today’s advancements in science and technology. Furthermore, since the future economy of our state and school district is ambivalent and we currently face an economic downturn, parents and their children will take some relief in knowing that “science and engineering jobs are growing 70% faster than other occupations” (stemschools.com). Thus, it could be projected that STEM School students will be at an advantage when competing for the high-tech jobs of the future.
The second initiative is to help provide an opportunity for all the students in RtII to attend a summer camp that will reinforce the academic skills they have been learning throughout the current school year, and experience other fun activities as well. RtII is an acronym for Response to Intervention and Instruction. It is a system of instruction that supports success for all students. It provides instruction at different levels or tiers depending on the needs and/or individual skill deficits of each student. Currently, Glenn Duncan ES officially has about 100 students receiving intensive interventions through the RtII process. This indicates that more than 20% of the students are significantly below their respective grade level. In the past, it has been noted that students in RtII usually regress during the summer vacation because in most cases, they do not get to rehearse what was learned during the traditional school year. Consequently, the summer camp will not only promote the retention and mastery of previously learned academic skills but for many students, it will hopefully provide a highlight of their summer vacation.
Please support these initiatives by coming out to Knucklehead's at 405 Vine St. in Reno, on May 7th at 8pm. There will be a $5 cover charge, which goes entirely to the benefit, as well as various other activities during the course of the evening, designed to squeeze a few dollars more out of your wallet, and into the enrichment of Duncan ES students! Aversion Therapy is donating their time, and Knucklehead's is donating the use of their facility for the event. We look forward to a good time, and coming up with a lot of support for a great cause!
